Ways to Sell Your Car ASAP | 73Shelves

Getting rid of cars for cash is an easy way to help a tough situation. If you have a junk car, or a car that is otherwise inoperable, a cash for cars company could be your only choice. Consider the alternative, which is allowing the car sit and turn out to be worthless. It is not probable that you will ever gain money on a car. Cars lose value rather quickly. The most logical solution to this is finding a dependable cash for cars firm that will sell the vehicle for you, without hassle.

Do a little research. There are thousands of car buying internet sites eager for your call, but only a handful of them are reputable firms. When selling your used car, you want to make sure you are selling to a company that has knowledge and experience and has money in the bank. Companies that have just started up present high risk of failure, since they have nothing to lose. Car buying services that have worked in the industry and built up their reputation will make sure that you are treated with the attention you deserve as a valued client.

Do not forget the initial part of the process, because it is the most important step in finding a car buying service to acquire your vehicle.

Do business with a company that operates in many states including yours. Some businesses are limited to certain states. The credible car buying services operate nationwide and buy any car. The company you select must have an office nearby where you can meet in-person. If the representative is courteous and knowledgeable, then you know you are on your way to selling your car.

Using a business nearby protects you since they must operate within the laws of your state. The last thing we want to do is propose that something bad may take place, but always be ready for possible concerns.

Request for a free vehicle valuation. Ask the car buying service the true worth of your vehicle, and see if they give a fair response. You can compare the company?s offer to the car?s blue book value. Get the advantage and ask for the vehicle estimation prior to engaging in any transaction. Finding the value of your car does not have to be difficult.

Get cash before the car is towed away. A company that is looking to deal honestly will send payment with the tow truck driver, or you will have the money wired to the financial institution of your choice. Any claims of repayments in the future, or when the used car title is transferred, must be warning signals.

Be certain they purchase numerous used cars or scrap cars each day. A true car and van purchasing service purchases all sorts of automobiles which includes scrap cars, trucks, and RVs. This shows they are regularly involved in car auctions and have the way to sell your vehicle fast. Therefore, they are more likely to offer a higher amount. Do not worry about a nationwide buying service deceiving you. They have no reason to do something like hat. They are buying hundreds of cars per week.

Kobo Touch, localized e-bookstore reach Portugal through FNAC

Kobo ereaders, localized ebookstore reach Portugal through FNAC

It's all too easy to forget in English-speaking countries that the e-reading selection often isn't as diverse in other parts of the world, where local authors are often kept out of the equation. The Portuguese may know that all too well, which makes Kobo's arrival in their country a potential breakthrough. A deal with European retailer FNAC has both the Kobo Touch and a localized Kobo e-bookstore reaching physical and online stores in Portgual as of today. The price strategy won't be a shock versus what we've seen through an earlier deal in France: the Touch itself costs €99.90 ($129), while books vary and typically hover around €15 ($19). Whether or not Kobo's offering is a good deal, its arrival could be a relief for lisboetas who'd rather not resort to paper and ink to catch up on their own culture.

Heritability of avoidant and dependent personality disorder traits

Heritability of avoidant and dependent personality disorder traits [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 24-Sep-2012

A new twin study from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health shows that the heritability of avoidant and dependent personality disorder traits might be higher than previously reported. People with avoidant personality disorder are often anxious in the company of others, while people with dependent personality disorder feel more secure.

Results from previous studies indicate that genetic factors explain about one third of the individual differences in these personality disorder traits, while the remaining variation is best explained by environmental influences. These studies used single-occasion interviews only.

In contrast, the current study used two different measures of assessment at two different time-points in order to measure personality disorders traits, and is therefore considered more methodologically sound. In 1998, 8,045 young adult twins answered a questionnaire that included questions about personality disorder traits. Some years later, 2794 of these twins took part in a structured diagnostic interview.

Both identical (monozygotic) and fraternal (dizygotic) twins participated. Identical twins share 100% of the genetic material, while fraternal twins share on average 50%meaning that they are genetically similar to other siblings. By comparing how similar the two types of twin pairs are on a particular trait, researchers can determine how much of the variation between individuals can be explained by genes and environment, respectively.

Higher heritability when controlling for random effects

The researchers found that two thirds of the variation in avoidant and dependent personality disorder traits could be explained by genes, and that the most important environmental influences were those unique to each twin. Such environmental influences can be any that contribute to the twins in a pair being different, e.g. the influence of different friends, teachers, activities, or various life events.

It is important to emphasize that the term heritability does not refer to individuals per se. Heritability is a statistic that relates to the population as a whole, and is expressed as a proportion of how much the total variation in a trait, such as personality disorders, is influenced by genes, says PhD student and first author of the study Line C. Gjerde.

The strength of this study is that we have measured personality disorder traits with both a questionnaire and, at a later time-point, an interview. This provides a better estimate of heritability than studies that measure personality disorder once and with one instrument only. The method applied in the current study allows us to capture the core of these personality disorder traits and not random effects, or effects specific to a certain time point or method of assessment, Gjerde explains.

Implications for clinicians

The key finding that genes are so influential in the development of personality disorders emphasizes the importance of obtaining a thorough family history from patients with symptoms of such disorders. However, this does not mean that personality disorders are not treatable. Gjerde emphasizes that the strong genetic influence found in the study does not imply any form of determinism:

If a person has a family history of personality disorders, this does not necessarily mean that he or she will develop a personality disorder. Whether or not a genetic vulnerability leads to the expression of a certain trait or disorder depends on a complex interplay of both genetic and environmental factors.

###

The study was carried out in collaboration with the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics at the Virginia Commonwealth University, USA.

Fact file: What is a personality disorder?

According to the diagnostic manual DSM-IV, a personality disorder is an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individual's culture, is pervasive and inflexible, has an onset in early adolescence or early adulthood, is stable over time, and leads to distress or impairment.

Break Through Your "OK Plateau" By Studying Yourself Failing [Video]

Break Through Your "OK Plateau" By Studying Yourself FailingBreak Through Your "OK Plateau" By Studying Yourself Failing When we get good at something, we put those skills on autopilot and we stop getting better. Author Joshua Foer calls this the "OK Plateau." It happens when we reach an acceptable level of skill, and we stop trying new things. Thankfully, it's possible to break through.

Foer identifies four principles that can help you push through your own OK Plateau:

  1. Operate outside of your comfort zone and study yourself failing.
  2. Try to walk in the shoes of someone who is more confident than you.
  3. Seek out critical and immediate feedback.
  4. Treat what you do like a science (test, hypothesize, theorize).

Foer's point is that if you want to push your skills past the "OK Plateau" you have to do it on purpose. Once you get to that autopilot mode, you're not improving, because you're not noticing what you're doing right (or wrong), and you're not trying new things. Check out the video above from the Behance Conference for Foer's examples and more info.

Microsoft urges customers to install security tool

11 hrs.

Microsoft urged Windows users on Monday to install a free piece of security software to protect PCs from a newly discovered bug in the Internet Explorer browser.

The security flaw, which researchers say could allow hackers to take remote control of an infected PC, affects Internet Explorer browsers used by hundreds of millions of consumers and workers. Microsoft said it will advise customers on its website to install the security software as an interim measure, buying it time to fix the bug and release a new, more secure version of Internet Explorer.

The free security tool, which is known as the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit, or EMET, is available from Microsoft.

Eric Romang, a researcher in Luxembourg, discovered the flaw in Internet Explorer on Friday, when his PC was infected by a piece of malicious software known as Poison Ivy that hackers use to steal data or take remote control of PCs.

When he analyzed the infection, he learned that Poison Ivy had gotten on to his system by exploiting a previously unknown bug, or "zero-day" vulnerability, in Internet Explorer.

"Any time you see a zero-day like this, it is concerning," said Liam O Murchu, a research manager with anti-virus software maker Symantec. "There are no patches available. It is very difficult for people to protect themselves."

Zero-day vulnerabilities are rare, mostly because they are hard to identify ? requiring highly skilled software engineers or hackers with lots of time to scrutinize code for holes that can be exploited to launch attacks. Security experts only disclosed discovery of eight major zero-day vulnerabilities in all of 2011, according Symantec.

Symantec and other major anti-virus software makers have already updated their products to protect customers against the newly discovered bug in Internet Explorer. Yet O Murchu said that may not be sufficient to ward off adversaries.

"The danger with these types of attacks is that they will mutate and the attackers will find a way to evade the defenses we have in place," he said.

Some security experts said computer users should avoid Internet Explorer, even if they install the EMET security tool available from Microsoft.

"It doesn't appear to be completely effective," said Tod Beardsley, an engineering manager with the security firm Rapid7.

Rapid7 released software on Monday that security experts can use to simulate attacks that exploit the security flaw in Internet Explorer to see whether corporate networks are vulnerable to that particular bug.

Marc Maiffret, chief technology officer of the security firm BeyondTrust, said it may not be feasible for some businesses and consumers to install Microsoft's EMET tool on their PCs.

He said the security software has in some cases proven to be incompatible with existing programs already running on networks.

Dave Marcus, director of advanced research and threat intelligence with Intel Corp's McAfee security division, said it might be a daunting task for home users to locate, download and install the EMET tool.

Deal reached to resume construction on September 11 museum

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A deal has been reached to resume construction on a National September 11 Museum in New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Monday on the eve of the 11th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center towers.

A cost dispute between the foundation that controls the museum and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which is building the ambitious subterranean structure, has halted construction of the project for months.

Diverging estimates on the cost of the project, which had been scheduled to open this week prior to the delays, from each side range from $700 to more than $1 billion.

"I'm very gratified that on the eve of this important anniversary we are able to announce an agreement that will ensure the completion of the 9/11 museum," Bloomberg's statement said.

"My goal during this period has been to get construction of the museum restarted. This agreement ensures that it will be restarted very soon and will not stop until the museum is completed," he added.

The museum is designed to extend seven levels underground and will include artifacts from the day of the attacks, from firefighters' helmets to pieces of rubble to models of the site before the attacks, which killed 2,751 people in New York.

Bloomberg chairs the National September 11th Memorial and Museum foundation. The Port Authority is controlled by Governors Andrew Cuomo of New York and Chris Christie of New Jersey.

Under the agreement, representatives for all three will participate in a committee that oversees annual events, including Tuesday's September 11th ceremony.

The foundation had said in July that politicians would be excluded this year from speaking roles at the ceremony to focus on victims' families, who traditionally read the names of the dead. In the future, that decision will be made by committee, not just the foundation.

Under the deal, the Port Authority's cost obligations will be reduced by more than $150 million. Construction of the museum, however, must begin soon and continue until it is completed. The project is expected to take more than a year.

How Cats Show Affection | Babble Pets

06 300x225 7 Ways Cats Show Affection Cats love in unusual ways.

It?s one of the biggest things that I love about cats ? that they are not as overtly affectionate as you would expect a dog to be. They have this attitude about them that makes me feel a real kinship with them. You have to earn their love and their trust and when you do ? you feel all the more loved from them.

Where dogs may cover your face with kisses, bark at you affectionately when you walk in the door and wag their tail when you talk ? cats can be a lot more subtle.

From a dead mouse to big dilated eyes ? there are some easy signs that your cat is giving you some love, you just have to know what to look for!

Sony releases binaries to support JBQ AOSP project

Android Central

Last month Google’s Android Open Source Project lead Jean-Baptiste Queru (JBQ) announced the launch of an “experimental” project to bring the latest open-source Android to the Sony Xperia S (LT26). Sony quickly confirmed its support of the project, and today it’s followed through with the release of closed-source binaries to allow the project to continue. These are blobs of compiled code (e.g. graphics firmware) that cannot be open-sourced, but which must be built in advance in order for any AOSP build to work on Xperia S hardware.

In addition, Sony has reaffirmed its commitment to open-source Android “and the innovation it brings.” The company says that with the help of the proprietary files that have been provided, it expects the AOSP build should be capable of booting up and reaching the home screen.

The binaries are available to download from Sony’s developer world site at the source link. While the binaries won’t be of any use to custom ROM enthusiasts, they just might result in the quicker arrival of more stable AOSP builds for the Xperia S. There’s a long way left to go before Xperia S owners will be able to download and build open-source Android for their devices, but this is an important step along the way. We’ll be watching with interest in the months ahead.
