Microsoft Surface exposes its guts to iFixit, knows if you've been meddling with it

Microsoft Surface exposes its guts to iFixit, ranks

Now that the Microsoft Surface is in the wild and we've probed it from the outside, the tool-toters at iFixit have opened one up to see what makes it tick -- and whether you dare attempt a repair yourself. The first thing they noticed was how tricky it was to remove a plastic access cover, which caused unavoidable damage to the tamper-evident label when they finally got it off. That would tip repair depots that you've been rummaging about, likely rendering your warranty moot. Other sore spots included the LCD and glass being fused together, along with a keyboard connector that's impossible to get out without pulling the display off first. On the plus side, the iFixit team found the battery easy to remove despite being glued to the case (unlike other recent devices), and many un-soldered components that were also swappable. All that added up to a score of four on the repairability scale -- meaning that fixing one probably isn't a great DIY project, unless you're the patient type.

Ernst & Young Warns British Film, TV Biz On Corruption And Bribery ...

Earlier this month, the UK?s Serious Fraud Office said it would toughen its stance on bribery, meaning criminal penalties could become more commonplace. Today, Ernst & Young warns that the next front for enforcers could be the British film and television industries as companies increasingly work in emerging markets, and says the business should ?heed corruption and bribery risks in financing and making films abroad.? The report notes that ?In the U.S., enforcers have begun to ask questions of studios about potential bribery of foreign officials showing the extent of filmmaking?s exposure to such risks.? In April, the U.S. majors received letters of inquiry from the SEC regarding their China dealings, although it is considered unlikely the Hollywood studios are involved in any wrongdoing.

In the U.S., there are training exercises in place to teach employees the ins and outs of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. But in the UK, whereas oil and gas industry employees ?have a mindset to fight corruption,? the report says, ?it may not yet be ingrained in the entertainment industry? which is becoming more and more international. UK filmmakers received a funding boost this year which promotes inward investment, foreign exports and gives priority to bolstering growth and relations with Brazil and China, forming part of the basis for the E&Y bulletin.

E&Y partner Jonathan Middup said: ?Film and TV making is particularly exposed to bribery and corruption risk. Films are shot all over the world and in some cases they are in countries where corruption is commonplace. There is a lot of cash being used and there is a need to get access to areas closed to the public, creating a lot of potential touch points with local governments or even the military.? In some countries, how one accesses those things can run afoul of UK law even though they might be accepted practices in the country in question.

Here are Ernst & Young?s tips for avoiding pitfalls:

? Control of film distribution by one party, which can be government-owned, can increase the risk of corruption. Filmmakers need to make sure they are not making inappropriate payments to gain access to this market.

? Gift-giving is important in certain cultures, but under some circumstances could be construed as a bribe. Filmmaking also may need access to areas or locations closed to the public which may risk so called ?facilitation? payments which are illegal under the Bribery Act. Close attention should be given to avoid making such payments.

? Under the Bribery Act failure to carry out checks on third parties leaves a company open to unlimited fines if it was to have a bribery or corruption problem. Joint ventures and third parties doing business on filmmakers? behalf should be background checked ? film companies need to know who they are dealing with and what relationship they have to the government.

Leftover Pasta? Make a Frittata! | The Kitchn

2012-10-23-PastaFrittata-2.jpgThe next time you find yourself with a neglected cup of macaroni or that last serving of spaghetti that no one seems to want, promise me you'll try this. I've been making pasta frittatas ever since another Kitchn writer mentioned it years ago, and it is hands down my favorite way to use up leftover pasta?along with whatever else is hanging around in the fridge.

2012-10-23-PastaFrittata-1.jpgYou make this frittata just like any other. First, cook any meats or vegetables you want to add, then stir in the leftover pasta until it's warmed through. Sprinkle with cheese, then pour the whisked eggs over top. Bake until set and serve. (See our full tutorial on How to Make a Frittata for a more in-depth description.)

This works equally well with plain un-sauced pasta or with a portion or two of an actual pasta dish (the pasta pictured here was leftover Fettuccine with Butternut Squash, Brown Butter, and Sage). If the pasta is very saucy, the frittata sometimes doesn't hold together quite as well. I'm happy with the jumble on my plate when this happens, but you can also warm the dish briefly in the microwave and then lift the pasta from the sauce before making the frittata.

If the idea of cooking chewy pasta into a eggy frittata sounds completely bizarre to you, like taking breakfast-for-dinner a little too far, I urge you to try it just once. I think you'll be hooked.

Do you ever make pasta frittatas? Have any favorite combos?

Google's $8 Billion Mobile Business Comes With Caveats - AllThingsD

iStockphoto | maybefalse

The first news nugget from Google?s earnings call today: The company says it?s now on pace to generate $8 billion a year from mobile, up from $2.5 billion a year ago.

Big jump! But there?s a catch: Last year?s number was solely from mobile advertising. This year?s number includes mobile ads along with gross revenue from media sold through the company?s Google Play store, as well as the gross revenue from app sales.

So: Big number, but unless Google wants to break it down, hard to tell how meaningful it is.

(Update: Later in the call, CFO Patrick Pichette tells analysts the ?vast majority? of that $8 billion comes from ads.)

Kixeye CEO Harbin Fires Back At Zynga For Suing The Cityville GM ...

Kixeye CEO Will Harbin is lashing out at Zynga for suing the vice president of product that the gaming startup poached earlier this month. Shortly after former Cityville general manager Alan Patmore left for Kixeye, Zynga sued him for theft of trade secrets and breach of contract.

Zynga says that Patmore stored more than 760 documents from his work computer in Dropbox before his last day. Zynga says these files contained design documents for unreleased titles, future monetization plans and compensation information on employees.

The suit names Patmore and while Kixeye isn?t a defendant, Harbin has decided to be more vocal today about Zynga?s suit. Update: Zynga obtained a court order today (embedded below) that prevents Patmore from destroying any of the company?s data, asks for a forensic analysis of his computers, iPhone and Dropbox account. He will also be deposed. Kixeye isn?t doing anything additionally legal at the moment:

?Zynga is burning to the ground and bleeding top talent and instead of trying to fix the problems ? better work environment and better products ? they are resorting to the only profit center that has ever really worked for them: their legal department.

It is simply another case of Zynga vindictively persecuting a former employee as an individual. Given their financial situation it all feels pretty desperate.

Our games have little in common with the ones that Zynga is known for. We make synchronous, combat strategy games. They make asynchronous cow clicking games. We have 2 of the top 7 highest grossing games on Facebook. Why on earth would we want to emulate a business that has seen a 75% decline in share price since their debut? According to their S1 their games average $.06 ARPDAU. Our games generate up to 20x that. You do the math.?

OK, for background:?Kixeye is a midcore social game developer. Midcore titles have smaller player bases, but they monetize better. They tend to target male audiences instead of the stereotypical middle-aged female demographic that Zynga and other casual gaming companies go after.?That?s why Harbin says that Kixeye?s games make up to 20 times as much as the 6 cents that Zynga earns on average per player per day.

Zynga, in turn, has criticized Kixeye for being ranked #34 in terms of monthly active users on the Facebook platform and for never having released a top 10 game (as ranked by player base) in the suit against Patmore. Kixeye has said it?s on track to do more than $100 million in revenues this year, while Zynga said that it expects to see $1.085 billion to $1.1 billion in bookings this year.

However, Zynga has recently made moves that suggest that it is considering midcore titles, which is a huge departure from the way it has done mass-market, casual titles. Zynga recently bought a developer named A Bit Lucky and framed it as a deal that would break the company into midcore gaming.

Around the same time, Kixeye poached Patmore, who oversaw one of Zynga?s most lucrative titles Cityville, to become the company?s vice president of product. Just to give you an idea of how important Cityville has been to Zynga, the title made 13 percent of Zynga?s online game revenue in the second quarter of this year, according to an SEC filing. Do the math and multiple that out against the company $291.5 million in quarterly online game revenue, and you can infer that Cityville alone made at least $38 million that quarter.

Zynga has also been bleeding senior talent throughout the last several months, as the company?s stock has declined to a current $2.50 from a $13-14 range in March. Some of the executives that left Zynga came over from EA and were close to former COO John Schappert, who resigned earlier this year.

At the same time,?Kixeye has not been shy to rub dirt in rivals? faces. Not only do they have an irreverent hiring campaign running in the local San Francisco BART metro system with laser-shooting unicorns, they made a viral video ad that jabs competitors in a not-so-subtle way. In the video below, a candidate interviews at three semi-fictitious gaming companies. Based on the logo, it?s not really hard to guess which one satirizes Zynga and its CEO Mark Pincus.

So it?s no wonder that Zynga, which hasn?t been shy to pursue litigation with former employees, to go after Patmore. Zynga had previously sued four former employees who left for Playdom, which was then acquired by Disney. Zynga later settled and one employee was even sentenced to jail time, although they didn?t actually serve that time.

Here?s a copy of the suit against Patmore:

Zynga also obtained a court order today that asks for a forensic analysis of his home computer, his Kixeye computer, his iPhone and his Dropbox account. There is also a restraining order preventing destruction of any Zynga property.

Mexico raids seized campuses, battle protesters

(AP) ? Police raided three teachers colleges in the western state of Michoacan Monday, where dozens of students had been hijacking buses and delivery trucks for a week to protest curriculum changes.

The protesters threw rocks and fireworks at police and burned dozens of trucks and buses as the authorities swept in and detained strikers. The massive police raids early Monday indicate patience is running out with campus takeovers, which have become common and often violent in Mexico. In recent weeks, hundreds of students at two other occupied campuses in Mexico have battled protesters to free their universities from occupation.

The standoff at the teachers colleges began over a week ago, when students seized the campuses to protest plans to require them to take English and computer science courses. The protesters say the colleges are meant to prepare teachers for rural areas where basic skills are more of a priority.

The protesting students fanned out, forcing bus and delivery truck drivers to move the vehicles to the occupied campuses. Protesters ended up holding the vehicles and several of their drivers for more than week.

Michoacan state spokesman Elina Ambriz said one of the three campuses had been recovered without incident. But state Government Secretary Jesus Reyna said 120 students were detained in another of the raids, and local television showed scenes of police battling masked, rock-throwing students, with burning buses in the background.

It was the latest in a round of pushbacks against campus takeovers, which have long been tolerated in Mexico because authorities are often loath to interfere. Police are wary of entering many colleges because of the concept of university autonomy, which protects academic independence by allowing colleges to run their own affairs. Memories of student massacres in 1968 and 1971 make cracking down on campus protests politically unpalatable.

But with common citizens and other students being affected by the takeovers, police and even students themselves have begun to act.

Last month, rejected students demanding admission to the University of Michoacan took over the campus. After two weeks without classes, dental and medical students donned motorcycle helmets, leaped the walls around the campus in white lab coats and battled to take their university back. Rocks and fists flew, sticks and baseball bats were swung, a fire extinguisher was turned against the medical students, and finally the squatters fled the school of medicine. Classes reopened days later.

This month, about 100 students at Mexico City's Autonomous University rushed the gates of their seized campus and briefly forced out striking students, who later returned with a pickup truck to bash in the gates and retake the school. The two sides are now in talks to end the standoff.

With only a dozen or so masked students holding some campuses at the school, frustration has boiled over among hundreds of locked-out students who tried to take make-up classes in improvised classrooms. The strikers were backed by some professors and university employees.

"We are now holding classes in tents, at the soccer field next to the campus, and the conditions are deplorable," said Gustavo Martinon, 23, a media arts student at the university's Cuautepec campus. "When it rains, the tents flood."

"The engineering students need labs and computers, and they don't have them. We (media arts) students need the radio station, the video facilities, and all the equipment we need."

Like most of the other students trying to take back the campus, Martinon said he has no position on whether the strikers have a legitimate grudge. Taking over a campus and affecting thousands of students, he said, isn't the way to air a grievance.

"This has nothing to do with a student movement," Martinon said. "The students are just caught in the middle."

The Mexico City strike was called to protest a crusading rector who wanted to clean up inefficiency and low graduation rates; only a few dozen of the university's nearly 15,000 students have actually graduated in the 11 years since the university was founded. The rector's proposals sparked opposition from professors and employees, and the protesters said they took over the campuses because of fraud in voting for the university's administrative board, and said they have the support of a majority of students.

"Assemblies held by the students at the university's five campuses decided to call a strike, because legal procedures had been violated and vote results ignored" in elections that gave the crusading rector a majority on the university council, said Javier Marmolejo, an anthropology professor and strike leader. He said the strike assemblies were often voice votes or raised hands. He didn't explain why he, a professor, is helping lead a student strike.

Outside citizens also have been affected by students blocking highways or taking over toll booths. Many students struggle to get by, working part time to finance their studies, and face a tight job market. Some fear employers may steer clear of graduates from universities with a history of stoppages, strikes and confrontations.

"When I completed my undergraduate degree and went to look for a job, the first thing they said to me was 'Where did you study?' and when I said the University of Michoacan, they said, 'Oh, gee, we don't really have any positions open right now,'" said Erika Garduno, a 31-year-old graduate science student. "They tag you as a problematic person, a striker."

Only about 20 percent of Mexican youths are expected to get some college education, but college graduates make up 35 percent or more of the unemployed. Unemployment for college-educated people in Mexico is higher than for high-school dropouts, in part, employers say, because universities graduate too many accountants, lawyers and doctors, instead of the careers the marketplace needs.

The medical students, not normally a radical bunch, led the takeback of the Michoacan campus late last month, in part because their school was at risk of losing its accreditation.

"I think the kids in medical school were tired of putting all their effort into this and because of the acts of a few people, the medical school loses its accreditation," said Victor Hugo Garduno, a professor of metallurgy, who has helped lead a new movement known as "No Mas Tomas" or "No More Takeovers."

In Michoacan and neighboring Guerrero state, student protesters often fight police with rocks and gasoline bombs, and take over highway toll booths and pocket the tolls. A thuggish student group in the western state of Jalisco was implicated in the murder of three students last year.

In 2011, several policemen faced charges after two students were killed, apparently by police fire, during violent protests in which students from a teacher's college in Guerrero blockaded a highway, set a gas station on fire and battled police. A gas station attendant died in the fire.

The 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded jointly to Robert J. Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka for studies of G-protein-coupled receptors, which are the portals by which information about the environment reaches the interior of cells and leads to their responses. About half of all drugs work by interacting with G-protein-coupled receptors.

The official Nobel Prize press release:

10 October 2012

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2012 to

Robert J. Lefkowitz
Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC, USA

and

Brian K. Kobilka
Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA, USA

"for studies of G-protein?coupled receptors"

Smart receptors on cell surfaces

Your body is a fine-tuned system of interactions between billions of cells. Each cell has tiny receptors that enable it to sense its environment, so it can adapt to new situtations. Robert Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka are awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for groundbreaking discoveries that reveal the inner workings of an important family of such receptors: G-protein?coupled receptors.

For a long time, it remained a mystery how cells could sense their environment. Scientists knew that hormones such as adrenalin had powerful effects: increasing blood pressure and making the heart beat faster. They suspected that cell surfaces contained some kind of recipient for hormones. But what these receptors actually consisted of and how they worked remained obscured for most of the 20th Century.

Lefkowitz started to use radioactivity in 1968 in order to trace cells' receptors. He attached an iodine isotope to various hormones, and thanks to the radiation, he managed to unveil several receptors, among those a receptor for adrenalin: ?-adrenergic receptor. His team of researchers extracted the receptor from its hiding place in the cell wall and gained an initial understanding of how it works.

The team achieved its next big step during the 1980s. The newly recruited Kobilka accepted the challenge to isolate the gene that codes for the ?-adrenergic receptor from the gigantic human genome. His creative approach allowed him to attain his goal. When the researchers analyzed the gene, they discovered that the receptor was similar to one in the eye that captures light. They realized that there is a whole family of receptors that look alike and function in the same manner.

Today this family is referred to as G-protein?coupled receptors. About a thousand genes code for such receptors, for example, for light, flavour, odour, adrenalin, histamine, dopamine and serotonin. About half of all medications achieve their effect through G-protein?coupled receptors.

The studies by Lefkowitz and Kobilka are crucial for understanding how G-protein?coupled receptors function. Furthermore, in 2011, Kobilka achieved another break-through; he and his research team captured an image of the ?-adrenergic receptor at the exact moment that it is activated by a hormone and sends a signal into the cell. This image is a molecular masterpiece ? the result of decades of research.

Ex-NFL great and 'Webster' actor Karras dies at 77

Brandon Jacobs, Jim HarbaughAP

Normally, you?d have to peel Brandon Jacobs off the ceiling for a game like this week?s 49ers-Giants matchup.

But because he hasn?t done much to contribute to the effort, the current 49ers and former Giants running back was subdued when asked about the rematch of last year?s NFC Championship Game.

?It would be different if things were different, put it that way,? Jacobs said, via Mike Garafolo of USA Today. ?I don?t have any thoughts on it.?

What?

Jacobs? reaction has everything to do with the fact he hasn?t played this year, after a preseason knee injury.

He said he was ready to play last week, but when he was held out it clearly put a damper on a normally fiery personality.

?How many times have you seen me [on the field] this year?? Jacobs asked rhetorically.

Asked if he was well enough to play, Jacobs replied:? ?I feel great. I feel phenomenal. My leg is as fresh as yours.?

He admits friustration, despite the way the season?s gone.

?Oh, very,? Jacobs said. ?Because I don?t know anything. I don?t know what?s what. But I?m hanging in there, I?m working every day, doing what I have to do. Let?s say I?m just working and doing what I have to do and that?s that.

?I?ve learned over the years when you open your mouth and say certain things, it hurts you, so I?m just going to shut up and keep working.?

And if he didn?t play against his old team?

?It would disappoint me a lot,? Jacobs said. ?But like I said, it?s not my call.?

Coach Jim Harbaugh said earlier in the day ?Nothing?s wrong, except nothing?s wrong.?

Now he at least has something to worry about.

Hotel Transylvania ;D [Please Look!! (:]

Thinking about starting a roleplay, but don't have the idea completely finished? Post it here, not in the main OOC forum!
So, last night I went out with the family, and due to having an eight year old brother we went and saw the new animated movie called Hotel Transylvania. At first I wasn't too sure because I hadn't seen any previews, and I figured if Tim Burton didn't toss it out there...It would be a flop. But! I can honestly say I enjoyed the cutesy movie greatly. :T Anyway! If you haven't seen previews, watched the movie, or have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about: Here you go. If you don't read the whole thing at least read the plot, because I most likely won't be able to explain it too well below. xD

Anyway!
Basically the movie is about "Dracula" opening up a hotel, a resort, that monsters can go to to escape from "humanity" so to speak, so monsters can be safe from human civilization. The main reason he really opened it was to protect his daughter from humans like he promised his wife he would ever before she died. Anyway! That's not the point, really. To cut to the chase it's his daughter's 118th birthday, and he's throwing her a huge party. All these "monsters" go to the resort to celebrate, because the Dracula's are well-known and liked. Somehow a human stumbles across the hotel, etc, etc, etc. READ THE PLOT! :P

Then again..
You don't really have to(though I prefer you do) because my idea for a role play is a little different. I was thinking that it could follow the movie along the lines of "Dracula" having a hotel in Transylvania for monsters to come to, he's celebrating his daughters 118th birthday(because that's like the simple "18" to humans) and a bunch of "monsters" come to celebrate. But instead of just one human stumbling upon the hotel while they're exploring out in the forest, a few humans do while "Camping" to so speak. They think it's a huge "costume party" while not knowing they're really among the "monsters" they're told about in town.
I figured it could go on from there, being strongly character-based. Literate. Realistic picture use.

Would anyone be interested in joining if I make a role play like that? Any Ideas? Thoughts?? I would LOVE some feedback. Please and Thank You. :)

Thanks for taking the time to read this!!!

Vaccination Clinic Helps Many Families and Their Pets | WREG.com ...

(Memphis) Memphis Animal Services helped hundreds of pet owners, by hosting a vaccination clinic Saturday.

10-year-old Hank did not like getting vaccinated Saturday, but owner Dan Garber says, it just had to get done.

??He`s kind of like my kid. My wife and I don`t have kids. We have a dog. To keep him healthy is the most important thing in our lives,? said Garber.

At just eight bucks for each shot, Hank and about 270 other animals received vaccinations to help ward off many diseases animals can come across, like rabies. ?

? Everything is so expensive these days. Where I can save money, it?s great,? said Garber.

Same goes for Thaddeus Hubbard and? his 2-year-old Rottweiler, Princess.

?I took her to the vet. They wanted 100 dollars just to see her. I didn`t want to pay that much,? said Hubbard.

So for more than a year, Hubbard didn?t.

? I had been putting them off for a while, because I didn`t want to pay the price,? said Hubbard.

Until he heard Memphis Animal Services would help keep his pup healthy and strong at just a fraction of the price.

?She got all three shots,? exclaimed Hubbard.

?You got to do these very year,? said Tracy Dunlap with Memphis Animal Services.

According to Dunlap, the city chose to help out families in the struggling economy, and its help that?s greatly needed in the city.

?A lot of times people will turn in their animals because they are sick and they may not be able to take care of them.? If we can keep the animals from getting sick, that keeps them off the streets and out of our building,? expressed Dunlap.

Dunlap says Memphis Animal Services will more than likely do another vaccination clinic in the near future. Which is good news for Hubbard. He might have saved on Hank`s shots, but the German Shepard,? Lab mix still has to eat.

?About 40 dollars every two weeks on this dog,? said Hubbard.
