HOUSTON (AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush, who has been hospitalized for more than a month, is getting excellent medical treatment and would advise people to "put the harps back in the closet," his longtime Houston chief of staff said Thursday evening.
But Jean Becker also pointed out in her statement that the 88-year-old Bush is sick and likely will be in the hospital for a while after a "terrible case of bronchitis which then triggered a series of complications."
Bush, the oldest living former president, has been in intensive care since Sunday. He was admitted to Methodist Hospital in Houston on Nov. 23 for treatment of what his spokesman Jim McGrath described as a "stubborn" cough. He had spent about a week there earlier in November for treatment of the same condition.
Becker said "most of the civilized world" contacted her Wednesday after disclosures Bush had been placed in the intensive care unit after physicians were having difficulty bringing a fever under control.
"Someday President George H.W. Bush might realize how beloved he is, but of course one of the reasons why he is so beloved is because he has no idea," Becker said in the at-times lighthearted statement that made multiple references to jokes and the former president's sense of humor.
She said updates about Bush's condition have been limited "out of respect for President Bush and the Bush family who, like most of us, prefer to deal with health issues in privacy." She said another factor was "because he is so beloved we knew everyone would overreact."
"I hope you all know how much your love, concern and support are appreciated," Becker said.
While the president's treatment was "unequaled anywhere," she said prayers also were needed and welcomed.
"I am thinking heaven has not seen such a barrage of prayer intentions since 'It's a Wonderful Life,'" she said, referring to the classic Christmas movie.
It was hoped Bush would be well enough to spend Christmas at home. But while his cough improved, he developed a persistent fever and his condition was downgraded to "guarded."
The former president has had visits from family and friends, including longtime friend James Baker III, his former Secretary of State. Bush's daughter, Dorothy, arrived Wednesday from her home in Bethesda, Md. Other visitors have included his sons George W. Bush, the 43rd president, and Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor.

Were I coach, this is exactly what I would tell the team:
1 - Abrams - lock unless he's hurt. 2 - Rice has edge due to experience 3 - Bertrand - lock unless he's hurt. 4 - wide open 5 - Egwu - lock unless he's hurt
The rotation should be those 4, Hill, Nunn, and the next two best post players w/ Tate and possibly LaTullip getting spot minutes at the 1 if Rice/Nunn/Hill/Bertrand can't handle temporary duties.
To me, the 4 spot is the really interesting one, because I could plausibly see 7 different guys (Bertrand, Henry, Langford, Shaw, Djimde, Colbert, and Morgan) starting there on opening day next year. My best guess is that Henry starts at the 4 with Langford and Colbert subbing in, one of Djimde or Shaw is no longer here, and Morgan redshirts, but I've been wrong many times before.

I've thought about this and honestly I think rice and Egwu are the only sure things in regards to the starting lineup. I also believe we will get 1 freshmen in the starting lineup to start the season. I also think we will have 2 transfers, which should clear things up

Only four of 450 deputies in the lower house, the State Duma, opposed the proposals. The bill, expected to pass its final reading on Friday, still needs President Vladimir Putin's signature to become law.
The proposals were added to a bill which would bar entry to Americans who violate the rights of Russians abroad and freeze their assets, mirroring the so-called U.S. Magnitsky Act.
The tit-for-tat feud began when the U.S. Congress approved the trade bill that orders the United States to deny visas to Russian human rights violators. It was drawn up because of concern over the death in a Russian prison of anti-corruption lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in 2009. It
Putin backed the original Duma bill but had signaled he wants to limit the spat with U.S. President Barack Obama's administration. The Kremlin says Obama will visit Russia early next year.
KREMLIN WORRIES ABOUT IMPACT
The Kremlin, worried about long-term damage to relations with Washington, distanced itself from the adoption measure on Wednesday, raising doubts about whether Putin will sign off on it.
Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the lawmakers' initiative as "tough and emotional" and the Kremlin's position as more "restrained".
Nationalist politicians have long viewed foreign adoptions of Russian children as an embarrassment that implies Russia cannot care for its own, but critics of the bill say children should not fall victim to political maneuvering.
Police said they detained 30 protesters for holding an unauthorized demonstration outside the Duma.
Some two dozen protesters stood in the freezing cold heckling deputies as they entered the building. One activist held up before-and-after pictures of a Russian child looking bruised, then happy with his new American parents.
"It deprives children of the possibility to grow up in families of loving parents," protester Natalya Tsymbalova said shortly before she was detained.
"To deprive children of this possibility is mean."
FOREIGN ADOPTIONS
Russia is the third most popular country for U.S. foreign adoptions after China and Ethiopia, according to the U.S. State Department. Last year, 962 orphans were adopted by Americans.
It is a statistic bemoaned by Russian politicians. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Russians should not be adopted abroad - although he did not say whether he supported the bill.
"Foreign adoptions is a sign of ... our indifference," Medvedev said in televised comments on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Lavrov said a complete ban on U.S. adoptions would be wrong and Education Minister Dmitry Livanov criticized the idea on his Twitter micro blog.
Any ban on U.S. adoptions would go back on new rules agreed in July.
NGOS FIGHT FOR LIFE
The Duma also passed a bill that bans foreign-sponsored political non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from working in Russia without registering as foreign agents and to ban people with double citizenships from leading those organizations.
NGOs, however, fight to continue their work in Russia.
"They may take away our registration, seize our office - don't know to whose advantage. But we can continue the work as an unregistered organization," Lyudmila Alexeyeva, head of the Moscow Helsinki Group (MHG), was quoted as saying by Interfax.

UNIONS and MSPs have claimed that workers at a university could be sacked, after redundancy notices were issued to staff in the run-up to Christmas.
At least 29 staff at Edinburgh?s Queen Margaret University (QMU) have been told they could lose their jobs and some employees face compulsory redundancy, according to the public sector union Unison,
The bulk of the jobs at risk are among the university?s security staff. Union officials say they have received notices warning them that they could be made redundant.
Staff have been told to reapply for their jobs, unions say, although QMU bosses have yet to decide on whether to go ahead with the redundancies. However, compulsory redundancy notices have been issued to three workers in the university?s finance department.
A QMU spokeswoman confirmed those three workers were being made redundant, but rejected union claims that other redundancy notices had been issued.
Unison has called on education secretary Michael Russell to intervene, claiming the university has failed to ?comply with its legal obligations to consult? union representatives and the government.
Unison regional organiser Emma Philips said QMU authorities should withdraw the redundancies.
She said: ?The planned changes are part of a reorganisation with enough jobs for all existing staff.
?We have now written to Mike Russell to tell him we do not believe there is a genuine redundancy situation. The jobs still exist, although there is a change to some of the tasks within the jobs.
?We want Queen Margaret University to withdraw all notices of redundancy and review all their processes in regard to this issue. And we call on Mike Russell as education secretary to take swift action to ensure this happens.?
Labour MSPs Neil Findlay, Kezia Dugdale and Sarah Boyack have also written to Mr Russell demanding that he steps in to prevent the redundancies. Mr Findlay, Labour?s shadow learning minister, said: ?I am very concerned at these developments. It seems that agreed procedures have not been followed and that staff have been treated very poorly.
?There appears to be no need for the compulsory redundancies.?
A QMU spokeswoman said: ?The focus within the university is on investment and growth. Nevertheless, three staff have been made redundant in the finance team, as part of a departmental restructure to meet customer needs.
?Separately, within our security function, we started a consultation with staff and trades unions in September on proposals for reorganisation.
?It is our intention to avoid any of the security team being dismissed as a result of the reorganisation.?
